It's a Matter of Life 2021
“Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless.”
“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act."
"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
THESE ARE OUR "SANCTITY OF LIFE" WEEKLY BULLETIN REFLECTIONS
03.14.2021 Many of our most powerful politicians favor unfettered abortion which poses a societal threat deeper than the abortion issue. We need to ask ourselves, “Will a society which has assumed the right to kill infants in the womb find any impediment to killing other human beings who are judged unwanted, deemed imperfect physically or mentally or considered a social nuisance?” The Roe v. Wade case obscured the boundary to confer personhood on a human being and we now find ourselves on a precarious, slippery slope that leads us inevitably to the disposal of any “inconvenient” people. As our individual demand for affluence continues unabated and the economic crunch grows larger, the amount of compassion that the legislature, the courts and our culture will have for the old and infirm does not seem likely to be significant considering the precedent of the non-protection given to the unborn.
03.07.2021 Almost daily we hear statements from so-called “devout, practicing Catholics” who advocate for law and practices that disrespect the sanctity of human life. There are some who lead family foundations that, under the guise of helping the poor and “bringing the Catholic Church back to its social justice roots”, who are advocates for Planned Parenthood; all forms of contraception, sterilization; unfettered destruction of the unborn up until birth; and global population control. One of the “great viruses” of our day is “Cafeteria Catholicism” – those who claim to be Catholic but who ignore God’s revelation in promoting public policies that make a mockery of God’s revelation. When people claim to be Catholic but ignore the teaching of the Church they are doing immense damage to their own souls as well as causing great harm to the public.
02.28.2021 In the April 1972 Supreme Court decision in Sierra v Morton, Justice Douglas wrote in the dissenting view, “The ordinary corporation is a ‘person’…So it should be as respects valleys, alpine meadows, rivers, lakes estuaries, beaches, ridges, groves of trees, swampland or even air.” In 1973 he agreed with Roe v Wade decision saying children are not persons. Today in our country, corporations, trees, beaches, wetlands are rigorously protected. Unborn children, being declared by law not to be persons, are afforded no protection and can be exterminated without consequence of law.
02.21.2021 Our society has a tendency to push to the edges of our own lives the plights of our vulnerable members. In today’s youth-obsessed culture the elderly become invisible. We are uncomfortable around the disabled who struggle with physical and mental limitations and we distance ourselves. We are shamed by our indifference to the epidemic murder of the unborn and close our eyes, ears and hearts to their now silent cries. We become busy with life and we forget that in God’s plan all life is sacred. Life is lived in many forms and should be celebrated in all of its times and stages from fertilization to earthly birth to the moment when our last breath is drawn and we are born to eternal life.
02.14.2021 A 12-year-old girl who has cerebral palsy says, “I can’t walk or feed myself but I am not ‘suffering from cerebral palsy’. I use a wheelchair but I am not ‘confined to a wheelchair’. I have pain but I do not need to be ‘put out of my misery’. “ She is keenly aware that “normal” people can use their erroneous assumptions about the “quality” of her life to justify withholding care for her as an act of “mercy”. If we permit euthanizing the disabled or elderly by withholding food and water or by any other means, it is at its core an act of total selfishness. The reality is that instead of “putting them out of their misery”, we are putting them out of ours.
02.07.2021 Legislators pass laws to legally kill a baby on the day it is born, and it is celebrated. We are in the midst of pure evil. We have an enemy of the unborn who flaunts Church teachings and who is ruling by fiat while on a mission to destroy hard won protections for the pre-born in our nation and internationally. We are in the midst of pure evil. When Jesus was a baby, satan prompted the government to murder babies. We have a different government but the same old demons. We are in the midst of pure evil. Christians, this is not a time to let discouragement get you down. Though it may look like satan has won, this is just one battle in the spiritual warfare in which we find ourselves. God will win the war. Keep the faith. Don't give up. We need to trust in Jesus now more than ever. Look up, fast and pray, hold on to your faith and its Truth with all your heart, mind and soul. God is on His throne. He is still in control.
01.31.202 In today's world, violent graphic images that would have been forbidden a few years ago are now common place. Frequently, pictures and information about the Holocaust are readily displayed. Hollywood made a movie about the slaughter in Rwanda. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago had an exhibit of human cadavers without their skin (including a pregnant woman with her unborn child visible in the womb.) Though these pictures are now common, many become incensed if we show a picture of an aborted, mutilated baby. It may offend our tender sesnsibilities. The Pr-Life movement now accepts using images of an aborted baby in our educational efforts. Because, it says in one second that ehich even the most well-informed advocate for life could not say in two hours. It says, "This is a human beingand it is dead."
01.24.2021 Civilized societies restrict individual freedoms when that "choice" would harm an innocent person. Does a man have the freedom to rape a woman if that is his choice? After all, it is his body, why do we have a right to tell him what to do with it? Why do we have a right to impose our morals on him? By emphasizing a rapist’s right to choose, we clearly are completely ignoring the rights of the woman. The pro-choice position always overlooks the victim’s right to choose. Women don’t choose rape. African Americans didn’t choose slavery. The Jews didn’t choose gas chambers. And babies don’t choose to be aborted.
01.17.2021 However we choose to look at it, THE UNITED STATES has forever changed. In an instant, the hope we held for a continuing, successful future for the Culture of Life has seemingly evaporated. Going forward, some important questions for patriotic Christians: Are we still standing in faith and trust that this great country WILL be in the hands of God Almighty and He will carry out His glorious plan? This truly is a battle for the soul of this great nation. Good vs evil. Spiritual warfare. Put on the breastplate of righteousness and the full armor of God as the road has gotten bumpy. There is a price for freedom and peace and we must stand willing to pay that price for the future of our children, our grandchildren, our Faith and this nation gifted to us by Almighty God. His Word tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. And, through it all, Jesus remains on the Throne. Keep the Faith!
01.10.2021 Amnesty International, just one of numerous organizations we might not think to be among those who are a “clanging bell” extolling society’s support of abortion, defines it as follows: “An abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. It is a basic healthcare need for millions of women, girls and others who can become pregnant” (whom ever that may be). Christians must not be deceived by these words. It is a definition straight from the pit of hell. Then, what is abortion? Abortion is a mother killing her child, a doctor killing his patient, and, sadly, a world turning its back. Abortion kills a unique human being. There will never be another person like the one the abortionist murdered.
01.03.2021 Increasingly, we read reports on the mass abortion of children who are determined to have Down syndrome through prenatal testing. Countries like Iceland, for example, have all but eliminated such babies from being born. In Denmark, which aggressively tests expectant mothers, some 95 percent of the babies testing positive for Down are aborted. Horrified, people used to associate eugenics with the Nazis and other totalitarian regimes. Indeed, once human life is found to be disposable in some circumstances, the policy is easily expanded to other “unwanted” humans—whether physically disabled or those holding unapproved opinions. Prenatal testing is changing who gets born and who doesn’t. This is the scourge of eugenics. It is back. It has gone mainstream. And is just the beginning. Saint Augustine says that there can only be two basic loves: The love of God unto the forgetfulness of self, or the love of self unto the forgetfulness and denial of God. This latter love is the sad state of today’s postmodern society. Framing the murder of babies with Down Syndromes as a “choice" simply because of who God created them to be is a disturbing commentary on the depths of moral depravity to which our increasingly Godless culture has fallen. We may not have lost our minds...but, how about our souls?
